Abu Salem fled to Portugal fearing adversaries

New Delhi Nov. 2 . Underworld don and a main accused in the 1993 serial Bombay blasts case, Abu Salem, is understood to have confessed during a hearing in a Portuguese court that he entered Portugal on fake documents, while running away from his Indian mafia adversaries. He had said that the Indian mafia had been chasing him ever since he parted ways with them, according to information reaching here. The court was trying him for entering the country with forged documents and obstructing government servants from performing their duty.Salem was in the gang of Dawood Ibrahim, recently declared an international terrorist by the U.S., till the mid-1990s and part of the group that conspired and executed the Bombay blasts.

Referring to the charge of obstructing government servants (police men) in performing their duties, Salem told the court that he did not see the police when they signalled him to stop. The Portuguese Government has dropped one of the three charges against Salem — of marrying a local girl to get a resident permit. — PTI
