Surrounded by the Nagpahari mountains, the temple town of Pushkar, approximately 11 km from Ajmer, hosts the fair in the month of Kartik (significant month in the Hindu calendar) and thus many people come to take a holy dip in the sarovar, according to Punita Singh, Assistant Director, Tourism of Ajmer district, who is coordinating the fair. The fair, which gets visitors from England, Germany, France, Italy and Israel, was inaugurated yesterday with the flag-hosting ceremony by the Collector of Ajmer, Niranjan Arya. Besides the spiritual angle, the Pushkar fair, which began yesterday and will end on November 9, is famous for the cattle fair where people from various parts of the country like Maharashtra, Punjab and Gujarat, come to buy and sell cattle. ``It is a big socio-economic event involving cattle, pilgrims, tourists and traders,'' she said. ``Just the fair period attracts 4,000-5,000 tourists while the total number of visitors during the month of Kartika goes upto five lakh''. --PTI
