Four held for punting

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI NOV. 2. Four persons have been arrested by the North-East Delhi police for allegedly organising betting for the cricket match between India and Australia played in Mumbai on Saturday. The police have recovered a large number of communication instruments from the accused who are said to be in league with top bookies of Mumbai.

According to the police, the Seemapuri police, under the supervision of ACP (Seempuri) raided a hideout in JK-Block of Dilshad Garden on Saturday following a tip-off. Those arrested have been identified as Rajiv Arora (33), Nitin Kumar Chugh (22), Manoj Arora (30) and Suresh Chand (35).

The police recovered Rs. 3,200 in cash, 12 mobile phones, six tape recorders, 21 audio cassettes, two diaries, 40 notebooks, a Maruti Esteem car and some other communication equipment and accessories from the accused. The flat, which was bought from the money earned through betting, is also being sealed.

Interrogation revealed that Rajiv Arora and his brother, Manoj, were the kingpins of the racket. Rajiv used to be in contact with persons, who wanted to place the bets, across the Capital. In turn, he was in touch with Bittoo, a resident of Jhilmil Colony in North-East Delhi, who used to provide information about the rates from Mumbai. These rates were offered to the "players" within the Capital.

Rajiv also told the police that he was in touch with big satta operators like Bittoo and Satish, who operate from posh localities of Delhi and Haryana. Bittoo and Satish are said to be further in touch with bookies operating from Mumbai and England. The police are now trying to unearth the exact links between these bookies and also apprehend Bittoo and Satish.
