Liquor worth Rs. 6 lakhs seized

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI NOV. 2. Two persons have been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police for allegedly ferrying illicit liquor in their vehicles. The police recovered 14,000 liquor bottles worth Rs. 6 lakhs from the vehicles. Those escorting the vehicles, however, managed to escape.

According to the police, the Anti-Robbery Section of the Crime Branch got a tip-off about the movement of a large consignment of illicit liquor from Haryana into the Capital through a lesser used road. Following the tip-off, a team under the supervision of ACP Harish Joshi laid a trap on 40-feet road at Krishna Vihar in Najafgarh, South-West Delhi on Saturday.

Around 5-30 p.m., two trucks were spotted coming from Khera Village. A Hyundai Accent car was trailing them. The police team tried to flag the vehicles down but they did not stop. The team then gave chase and managed to intercept the two trucks at some distance. However, they could not intercept the car. Drivers of both the vehicles, identified as Anoop Singh, a resident of Rohtak in Haryana, and Bhim Singh, a resident of Gorakhpur in Utttar Pradesh, were arrested.

Upon search, the police recovered 200 cases, comprising 9,600 bottles, from one of the trucks, while 95 cases, comprising 4,560 bottles, were recovered from the other vehicle. The consignment was coming from Bhiwadi in Rajasthan and was supposed to be sold to various retailers in the Capital.

The accused also told the police that both the trucks and the Hyundai Accent belonged to Nargesh, a resident of Krishna Vihar in Najafgarh. He was following the vehicles in his Hyundai Accent and managed to escape when the police began chasing him. A hunt has been launched to trace Nargesh, who used to procure the illegal liquor from Bhiwadi and sell it in Delhi.

A case under the Excise Act has been registered at the Najafgarh police station and further investigations are on.

Body found

The body of a 22-year-old man was found in a park at Nangloi in West Delhi today.

According to the police, the body was spotted by security guard of the DDA Park, Radhey Shyam, at Nihal Vihar in Nangloi around 6 a.m. The head and face were badly smashed with a blunt object.

The body was later identified as that of Prithvi Raj Singh, a resident of Nihal Vihar. He used to work as a casual labourer and also occasionally drive an autorickshaw.

A case of murder has been registered at the Nangloi police station and further investigations are on.

Suicide

A 60-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by consuming poisonous substance in her house at Mehrauli in South Delhi today.

According to the police, Heera Devi, wife of Phool Singh, a resident of jhuggi Shambhu Camp in Mehrauli, had a fight over a petty issue with her family members in the morning. Around 12-45 p.m., she consumed pesticide. She died on the spot.
