Ravi Teja triumphs

By Manuel Aaron

Ravi Teja and K. Sai Nirupama who won the boys and girls titles respectively in the National under-7 chess championship, with their trophies.

Thalambur Nov.3 Mummadi Ravi Teja of the Chess Academy of Hyderabad clinched the Under-7 boys title in the Vel's Srinivasa College of Engineering & Technology 17th National Under-7 boys & girls chess Championship which concluded at Thalambur. He was the only player to score nine points in this 11-round Swiss tournament.

At the end of the penultimate round , Ravi Teja was tied for the lead with State-mate Lalith Abhilash Reddy, both having 8.5 points each. Today, on the top board, Lalith was beaten by fellow Andhra player K. Harsh. This allowed Ravi Teja to win the title by just drawing with Niraj Saripalli of Goa.

Actually, when the draw was signed Ravi was a pawn up in a double rook ending and could have played on for a win. Ravi Teja is a third standard student in Sri Aurobindo Public School, Kalvakurthi, a remote village in Mahboobnagar district, some 80 km from Hyderabad. Ravi Teja is coached by G. Praveen Kumar, a school teacher. As Ravi Teja hails from a poor background, he is financially supported by Praveen Kumar. Ravi Teja's parents have not accompanied him here, only his coach has brought him here. When asked whether he is the Andhra Under-7 State Champion, Ravi Teja said, he had not played in it.

Ravi Teja told The Hindu that he hopes to get a FIDE rating soon as he has played in the three Rating tournaments held recently one after the other at Lucknow, Sahranpur and Delhi. He said that his notable victory so far had been at Delhi, where he drew against Swati Mohota, a National Woman A player from Kolkatta.

The girls' section was already won by another Andhra, K. Sai Nirupama who had scored a phenomenal 10 out of 10 yesterday. She finished the championship in style with yet another victory, thus winning all the 11 games she played.

With Sai streaking to an all-win-record, the other dispirited top contenders drew on the second and third tables to make the gulf still wider by a 2.5 margin.

Top seeded Chandana Priya Reddy and K.Vyshali, both of Andhra, finished second and third, 2.5 points behind Sai.

In today's game, Sai was in a losing position for the first time in the tournament. But the little lass showed her grit and determination to not only save herself from a two pawn deficit against another Andhra, B. Prathyusha, but also eventually won the game.

The Andhra players have shown their class here by winning many many prizes here. Of the top ten finishers in the boys, eight are from Andhra and in the girls, seven are from Andhra. The other States to get just one place in the top ten in both the boys and girls put together are from Goa, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Manipur and Maharashtra.

The two champions got Rs. 5000 each as first prize. But a bigger prize awaits them when they get back as the Andhra Pradesh Government awards Rs 1.4 lakhs to all National champions.

Grandmaster-elect R.B. Ramesh and cine star Raja gave away the prizes in a well attended closing ceremony. The Chairman of the Vel's Educational Group, Dr. Ishari Ganesh presided.
