Narendra Prasad passes away

KOZHIKODE NOV. 3. R. Narendra Prasad, playwright, film actor, teacher and literary critic of eminence, died at the PVS Hospital here today. He was 58. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

He was admitted to the hospital here on October 30 in a critical condition.

Dr. Prasad was suffering from breathlessness, caused by interstitial lung disease (ILD), a condition that caused disintegration of the lung, Jaikish, the doctor who attended on him at the PVS hospital told The Hindu.

Dr. Prasad had developed serious breathing problem at Cherthala early this month and was hospitalised in Kochi. After he was discharged,

he was admitted to the private hospital here. He was taking homeo medicines too.

Though seriously ill and having been given oxygen frequently, Dr. Prasad was conscious and talking to relatives last night and for sometime early this morning. But his condition deteriorated suddenly and he suffered a cardio-respiratory arrest from which he failed to recover. The end came around 8 a.m., Dr. Jaikish said.

His wife and relatives were with him at the time of his death.

Those in the film field and a huge crowd of his fans reached the hospital as news of his death spread.

The body was later taken to Mavelikkara, his hometown, via Ernakulam.

The Chief Minister, A. K. Antony, and his Cabinet colleagues condoled Dr. Prasad's death in Thiruvananthapuram. The Chief Minister paid rich tributes to Dr. Prasad's talent as an actor and art critic.

The death of Dr. Prasad was an irreplaceable loss to the academic community, Cyriac Thomas, Vice Chancellor of the Mahatma Gandhi University, said in Kottayam today. Dr. Prasad was a superb teacher and talented artist, he said. His contribution towards setting up the School of Letters at the university, where he had been serving as director till his death, was immense, Dr. Thomas said. The academic and administrative community at the university condoled the death of Dr. Prasad.

All educational institutions under the university would remain closed as a mark of respect to Dr. Prasad on Tuesday.
