Volleyball
By Our Sports Reporter
Tamil Nadu's M. Sajini tries to drop the ball, watched by Chhattisgarh's Priya Rani, at the 12th Mini National volleyball championship in Bangalore on Wednesday.
But then the determined J&K boys took the setback in its stride and put up a plucky display to edge past Chhattisgarh in a five setter that had the decent crowd rooting for every point. Jammu won 17-25, 25-20, 14-25, 25-19, 15-12 in a group D clash that lasted 80 minutes. Jammu lads sure were not short of fighting qualities. Having lost the first set in which neither team impressed Jammu did get its act together in the second with Ankush Sharma and captain Vivek exploiting the chinks in Chhattisgarh defence. Chhattisgarh on its part too did have its heroes in Suraj Sing and Wasimuddin but the two despite winning the third set and taking a handy 2-1 set lead could not turn the tables on J&K. With the rest putting up a plucky defence Wasimuddin and to a large extent Vivek too placed their shots well, though the duo lacked the confidence to spike hard, to win the next two sets. In the decider it was Chhattisgarh which changed sides with a 8-6 advantage but then conceded the lead (10-13) before losing 12-15. Host Karnataka boys and girls began on a rousing note against relative beginners. While Karnataka boys defeated Gujarat 25-7, 25-7, 25-9 in just 42 minutes with captain Ashok revelling in attack, the State girls with captain Krithika Nath and Ashwini playing a notch above the rest were far too good for Goa girls in a group D match winning 25-11, 25-8, 25-8 in 50 minutes. Tamil Nadu girls, last year's bronze winners began in fine style outplaying Chhattisgarh in 34 minutes at 25-4, 25-2, 25-15. The lanky M. Sajini and captain Varalaksmi were simply unstoppable at the net while Karthigeshwari looked compact in defence. Uttaranchal boys and girls and Himachal Pradesh boys failed to turn up at the venue. Thirty one players barred: Haryana took the brunt of the Age screening committee 's wrath with six of its players debarred. While there was discontent among the northern States about some of the south States players escaping the axe, a few from TN and one player from Kerala too were denied participation. The barred players are: G. Silambarasan, B. Suresh Pandian, N. Iyyappa (all TN), Bijoy Swarnakar (WB), Santhomba Singh Ibajao Singh, Achobha Singh, Binanda Singh (all Manipur), Md. Shahid, Subas Jakar (both Rajasthan), Lalit Kumar, Rajnesh Sing, Sanjay, Zorawar Singh (all J&K), Jinto Joseph (kerala), Pritesh Raul (Goa), Anshu adav (MP), Arvind Sawarni, Jaikumar Patil Manoj Verma, Ranjan Kumar Misra (all Chhattisgarh), Rahul, Jitender, Pradeep, Siva, Bhupender and Kuldeep (all haryana), Abhishek Singh, Vivek Sngh, Jaynarayan Singh, Asgar Ali (all UP). The results: Boys: Group A: UP bt Jharkhand 25-13, 25-10, 25-14.Group B: Manipur w/o Uttaranchal. Group C: MP w/o Himachal Pradesh.
