Special PCR vans to patrol sensitive areas

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI NOV. 5. Special patrolling of Police Control Room vans has been ordered in sensitive areas as a follow-up to the recent meeting of the police, women activists and the National Commission for Women (NCW) to make the Capital "safe'' for women. A report on the action taken by the police after the October 31 meeting was submitted to the NCW.

Reading out the report at a press conference here today, the chairperson NCW, Poornima Advani, said: "I am very happy with the prompt action taken by the police. We had suggested 12 recommendations to ensure the safety of women; the police have taken action on nine. PCR vans have also been briefed to patrol areas of entertainment to keep an eye on potential mischief makers.''

Besides, increasing patrolling in areas, the numbers of women help-lines will be painted inside Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) as well as private buses operating in the city. Action will also be taken against buses with tape recorders playing vulgar music.

"Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Indian Penal Code, which forbids gathering of four or more people will be enforced for pan shops after 11 p.m. All pubs and other places serving liquor will be shut down by the same time. Directions have been issued to challan any restaurant, which is violating this order. Pamphlets will be printed with all the relevant help-line numbers for women and will be distributed in colleges, hostels and hospitals,'' she said.

In view of the upcoming Assembly elections, the Chairperson warned political parties against politicising individual cases of crime against women. Referring to the recent controversy in which Jamna Devi, a rape victim, was brought to a BJP press conference, Ms. Advani said: "Jamna Devi has complained to us.

The dignity of women is paramount and at no cost must individual crime against women be politicised. Due care must be exercised by all political parties in the forthcoming elections. Jamna Devi has also complained that she has got repeated threats from her husband's murderers and is feeling of insecure.''

The NCW will write to the Delhi Chief Secretary, the Health Department as well as the Education Department to ensure the safety of women in their areas. Surprise visits in buses by NCW members to check cases of eve-teasing are also on the cards.
