Hasty act

Sir, — As stated in your editorial, "Nothing federal about this" ( Nov. 4 ), the LTTE proposals for an Interim Self-Governing Authority cannot be acceptable to a sovereign state. You have been cautioning through your editorials that the Prime Minister and the President of Sri Lanka should work together to seek a solution to the decades-long ethnic crisis. But Chandrika Kumaratunga has acted hastily by proroguing Parliament and taking over key Ministries.

Sir, — The demand of the LTTE for ISGA control of the North-East sea of Sri Lanka is outrageous and fraught with danger. The ISGA control of the Palk Straits will increase tension at the International Boundary Line and disturb the tranquillity of Tamil Nadu.

Sir, — The Sri Lankan authorities should bury their political differences. Their response should be such that any difference which may help the LTTE in its quest for a separate state is quelled.

Sir, — If the Tamils, the Sinhalese and the other minorities should live together in peace and prosperity within a unified territory of Sri Lanka, the accumulated powers must be transferred to the ISGA. Coexistence of two sovereign powers may be agreed to under a Commonwealth of Sri Lankan States or Confederation of Sri Lanka by replacing the present Constitution that is the device for domination over the Tamils in the North-East. In the era of liberalisation and globalisation, concentration of power cannot be tolerated.
