Sri Lankan crisis

Sir, — I refer to the editorial "Sri Lanka in crisis again" ( Nov. 6 ). President Chandrika Kumaratunga and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, by moving against each other at a time when political stability is crucial to the peace process in the region, have exposed a lack of maturity. By taking away the portfolio of three Ministers, proroguing Parliament and declaring an emergency, Ms. Kumaratunga has played into the hands of those seeking a de facto separate state. Both the President and Prime Minister should bear in mind that the peace process should not be the casualty.

Sairam Sanath Kumar,
Thrissur, Kerala

Sir, — Ms. Kumaratunga has prorogued Parliament for a short spell. Given the arithmetic of the composition of the Parliament, this is the way she could save herself. The present impasse will only strengthen the hands of the LTTE.

K.R.A. Narasiah,
Chennai

Sir, — How can terrorist groups be trusted? Will those who do not bother about the means to achieve their ends ever change?

Ravindran C.,
Vellore, T.N.

Sir, — The UNP and the PA should thrash out their differences for the security and survival of a plural state.

Ambli Nalini,
Pondicherry

Sir, — The peace talks initiated by Norway were making steady progress and at last a solution seemed to be in sight to end the ethnic conflict. Ms. Kumaratunga's action has resulted in uncertainty and will possibly halt the peace process. Our foreign policy is at a crossroads and what shape it will take in the days to come is anybody's guess.

V. Padmanabhan,
Bangalore
