Letters to the Editor
Sir, There can be no two opinions that reservation for Dalits should be implemented promptly. But fixed reservation only leads to social tensions, as the wish of a majority is continuously neglected. Pappapatti is a case in point. It is high time that reservation was rotated to avoid unnecessary social tensions. As suggested by Mani Shankar Aiyar in "Pappapatti: constitutional issues" (Nov. 5), reservation may be made proportionate to the population of Dalits in each area. It will not only be truly democratic, but also give representation to all the people.
C.K. Neela Megam,
Sir, We have no perfect solution for the Pappapatti-Keeripatti panchayat election scene where Dalit chiefs resign as soon as they are sworn in. Let some politician take the initiative to find a workable solution.
P.K. Manimozhian,
