Letters to the Editor
Sir, The Bihar Government's proposal to amend the dowry law to provide for compulsory declaration of gifts received by the bridegroom's party from the bride's family (Nov. 6) is welcome. However this provision is likely to be rendered ineffective by vested interests. A ceiling should be fixed on the value of marriage gifts that can be given or received and the groom's party should declare its financial assets including costly electronic gadgets, vehicles, etc., both before and after the marriage.
