BJP's charge against Left parties in Bengal

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI NOV. 7. The Bharatiya Janata Party today alleged that the constitutional system had "broken down" in West Bengal and accused the Left parties "of running a parallel system in the State". The party was reacting to the killings of tea garden workers in Jalpaiguri district of the State.

Briefing the media this evening, the BJP spokesperson, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, also accused the Left parties of being involved in the attacks on Dalits. "We have definite information that their workers were directly involved in the attacks," said Mr. Naqvi.

The BJP also pulled up the Uttar Pradesh Government for incidents against Dalits and recurring communal flare-ups in the State. "The communal flareups in the State and the spate of violent incidents against the Dalits are a cause for great concern," he said.

He accused the U.P. Chief Minister, Mulayam Singh Yadav, of being more concerned about protecting the interests of certain industrial houses rather than protecting the weaker sections.
