Since the State Government completed the admission process sometime ago, it is not known what would happen to those already admitted to these colleges.Well-placed sources in the university said the Government and the colleges had been expecting the disaffiliation, but "they went ahead with the admissions." The number of students admitted to these colleges is not available. Thirteen other colleges, all offering degrees in the allopathic stream, had improved the strength of the faculty and escaped disaffiliation in the nick of time. The university has 187 colleges affiliated to it and of them 37 are allopathic. Of the remaining, 52 ayurvedic, 43 homeopathic, six unani and several nursing colleges, are from other streams. Last year, 25 colleges were served notice to improve the facilities as required by the Medical Council of India. But 12 failed to meet the standards. These colleges are spread across the State and all of them belong to the private sector, most of them run by trusts of politicians. One medical college run by a deemed university Dr. D.Y. Patil Medical College refused entry to experts set up by the State Government at the behest of the Governor, Mohd. Fazal, saying that they could be evaluated only by the Medical Council of India, the University Grants Commission or the Union Human Resources Ministry. It needed some blunt talking by the Governor to get them to accept inspection by his team.
