According to the police, the accident occurred when the driver of the jeep, carrying 16 women workers from Uchimalaikuppam to their workplace, a spinning mill at Vinnanoor, swerved to avoid an oncoming lorry. Sathya (16) and Thilagam (18) of Kuppanatham, Sarala (16) of Krishnapuram and Kannagi (21) of Ammapalayam died on the spot, while Jayashree (15) of Srisorpanandal died after admission to the Government Hospital, Tiruvannamalai. Ten other workers and the jeep driver, Kamaraj, were injured and admitted to the Government Hospital, Tiruvannamalai General Hospital.
Three die in van-lorry smash
Our Erode Staff Reporter reports: Three persons including a two-year-old female child died and 10 others were injured in a collision between a van and lorry near Perundurai in this district this evening. According to the police, a group of 16 was returning in the van to Coonoor in the Nilgiris after attending a marriage at Bhavani Kooduthurai, when the lorry coming from the opposite direction dashed against the vehicle, near the Teachers' Colony. Two occupants of the van Sampath (40) and Jayamani (30) were crushed to death on the spot. Dharani (2) died after admission to hospital here. Following the accident, which occurred on the National Highway, the traffic was disrupted for half hour.
