`Direct attack on freedom of expression'

By Our Special Correspondent

LUCKNOW Nov. 8. A meeting of journalists here today condemned the Tamil Nadu State Assembly decision to punish the senior journalists of The Hindu on a charge of committing breach of privilege of the House.

The decision was a direct attack on the freedom of expression as guaranteed by the Constitution and a matter of concern not only for the fraternity of journalists but for every Indian who believed in the principle of dissent and fair criticism in a democracy, said a resolution adopted at the meeting held in the State Secretariat Annexe under the auspices of the Uttar Pradesh Accredited Press Correspondents Committee.

Expressing solidarity with the journalists of The Hindu, the meeting demanded immediate withdrawal of the Assembly decision.

It was also resolved at the meeting that the news correspondents would stage protest against the action by absenting for an hour from the press gallery of the Uttar Pradesh State Assembly when the House meets here for the Budget session on Monday next, said Ram Dutt Tripathi, president of the Committee.

The meeting was presided over by senior journalist and editor of Janmorcha, Sheetla Singh.
