EVMs in all constituencies

By Our Staff Correspondent

JAIPUR NOV. 8. Intensive training will be provided to the presiding officers and polling officers in the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) during the coming Assembly elections in Rajasthan, as the EVMs will be pressed into service in all the 200 constituencies in the State for the first time. The Chief Election Officer, Lalit Kothari, today issued instructions for organising one-day training programmes for the polling officials in such a way that the officials of at least 25 polling parties were trained together in a single programme. As part of the training, information relating to EVMs, voting process and sealing of machines after the end of polling will be given. The District Election Officers will monitor the training, during which the Returning Officers would also remain present.

According to an official release issued here, the second training will be provided to the members of polling parties before they leave for their destination. Similar training will be imparted to the zonal, sector and area magistrates before the polling day. The CEO has also given directions for display of EVMs in the offices of District Election Officers and Returning Officers as well as at the appropriate public places to disseminate information about these machines. EVMs were used successfully in 39 constituencies during the previous Assembly elections in the State in 1998.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has appointed 131 invigilators in the State to keep a watch on the election process in general, and the expenditure incurred by the candidates in particular. Mr. Kothari said the invigilators would also ensure that the affidavits submitted by candidates while filing their nomination are in order.
