Pepsico plans potato processing unit in Howrah

By Our Staff Correspondent

KOLKATA NOV. 8. Pepsico has decided to set up a potato processing unit in Howrah district in West Bengal.

Addressing the special plenary session of the `Agro-East' organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here on Friday the State Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, said the company had received the requisite clearances from the State and the Union Government and were expected to start commissioning the unit by next month. Focussing on crop diversification and agri-processing sector to reap the harvest of higher rate of agricultural production especially in rice, potato and vegetables than the national average, the State has been able to attract huge investments in this sector.

Among the companies, which had already started commissioning or have decided to commission agri-processing units are: Keventers Bio Tech, Dabur, Frito Lay, Pataka Foods, and Calypso.

Mr. Bhattacharjee said special emphasis was laid on enhancing production of oilseeds in which the State was grossly deficient. West Bengal imports about 70 per cent of its edible oil from other States especially Uttar Pradesh.

To introduce modern water management techniques for better agricultural productivity, the State government has launched two pilot projects in the water deficient districts of Purulia and Bankura, in collaboration with the Israeli Government.
