Kambli, Morris hold back Baroda

Mumbai Nov. 8. Vinod Kambli's 22nd Ranji Trophy century helped Mumbai regain control of its Elite Group `A' match against Baroda at the Wankhede Stadium here on Saturday.

Playing his first Ranji match for Mumbai in 23 months - he played for South African provincial side Boland last year - Kambli came in after the fall of Amol Muzumdar in the first over after lunch and dealt with the situation with poise and responsibility.

More wickets tumbled in the second session leaving Mumbai's fortunes in the hands of the seventh-wicket pair in Kambli and all-rounder Robin Morris. After a scratchy start, the left-hander struck twelve boundaries to reach his 50.

Thereafter he showed utmost restraint, the circumstances forcing him not to risk chances against a Baroda attack, which was for a better part of the 86 overs in the hands of medium pacers, Rakesh Patel, Irfan Pathan (Sr) and Shekhar Joshi.

Once the first target of 213 was passed, Morris left his ground to thrash left arm spinner Rajesh Pawar (formerly of Mumbai) to the fence. Morris reached his half-century with six fours and one six, a fine effort in a little over two hours. Soon Kambli completed his century in 15 minutes short of four hours.

The pair kept the Baroda attack at bay for 46.3 overs adding 136 runs. But for the Mumbai players, thoughts would have taken them back to last season, when its top order failed miserably and depended on the lower order to take it to safety in almost all matches.

The scores: Baroda 213 vs Mumbai 278 for six in 86.1 overs (V. Kambli batting 108, Robin Morris batting 51, Shekhar Joshi three for 65).
