Letters to the Editor
Sir, Reading an account of Friday's events was like watching a horror movie and I felt like somebody had infringed my personal freedom. Kudur Suresh, Bangalore * * * Sir, The Hindu has undergone many vicissitudes in its long chequered history with forbearance and fortitude. Ironically, the 125th anniversary will be remembered for the unprecedented situation your paper is in now. Surely, The Hindu will surmount the present challenge, as usual. P.K. Varadarajan, Chennai * * * Sir, If a leading paper with 125 years of tradition is at the receiving end of such intolerance, I wonder what will be the plight of the common man. P. Velvizhy, Tuticorin, T.N. * * * Sir, As a free citizen, I was pained at the happenings on The Hindu's premises. My unflinching support for your struggle for upholding constitutional rights. C. Gopal Rao, Hyderabad * * * Sir, The treatment meted out to a newspaper that has a worldwide reputation for its even-handedness and accuracy is simply unacceptable. V.N. Gopal, Chennai * * * Sir, Millions of freedom lovers throughout the country and readers around the world are agitated. If the fate of The Hindu is like this, how will an ordinary citizen of Tamil Nadu be able to walk and talk freely? A. Jacob Sahayam, Thiruvananthapuram * * * Sir, There are a number of such cases; only the affected people do not have access to the front page of India's biggest and oldest newspaper; nor can they send telegrams to the Chief Justice of India. Hopefully, now the Government will be shown in its true light. Priyasen Shah, Chennai * * * Sir, The words `objected to' are at the maximum treated as comments in the English language but can never be treated as defamatory. Even otherwise sentencing for 15 days is extraordinary since the same anger could have been shown by the Tamil Nadu Assembly against the journalists by admonishing them in a milder form. C. Lakshmi Narain, Chennai * * * Sir, I would like to extend my strong support to The Hindu in fighting the assault on press freedom. Kamalram Sajeev, Kozhikode * * * Sir, The harassment of journalists deserves nationwide condemnation. This trend will continue until the people stand up and say enough is enough and start participating in the democratic process in a responsible way, discarding caste, religious and linguistic sentiments. Hari, Virudhunagar, T.N.
