Letters to the Editor
Sir, It is not just a crude and unconstitutional misadventure. It is sacrilege. Ramesh Goswami, New Delhi * * * Sir, Those who are familiar with the goings-on in Tamil Nadu under its present rulers are not exactly shocked at the turn of events. That the Tamil Nadu police entered the premises of The Hindu without necessary papers shows how unprofessional they have become. The developments do not augur well for the functioning of democracy in the country. Kangayam R. Rangaswamy, Madison, U.S. * * * Sir, The world's largest democracy must mourn the turn of events. Sudheer Reddy, Bangalore * * * Sir, Any Government in power must have a certain tolerance level to accept criticism in good faith and make amends. Treating persons of some repute and a newspaper with a 125-year tradition calls for some decency. We extend our support and shall be with you in your actions to safeguard the freedom of the press and other fundamental rights. Lt. Col. (retd.) R.V.S. Mani, Madurai * * * Sir, The Centre or the courts should act immediately so that constitutional rights are restored. Otherwise it would be a shame to say India is a democratic country. B. Jayakumar, Kancheepuram, T.N. * * * Sir, It is really disheartening to see the power of the Press, the fourth estate, being trampled upon. Sasidaran, Chennai * * * Sir, Let the democratic voice of revolt against the Tamil Nadu Assembly's order be heard everywhere. P. Venkatesh, Salem, T.N. * * * Sir, This is an attempt to gag the Press. Please go ahead with your fearless fight against this authoritarian rule and its dictatorial dispensation with more determination. D. Samuel Lawrence, Madurai, T.N. * * * Sir, It is not simply an attack on the freedom of Press, but an attack on democracy itself. The reputation of a Legislative Assembly is not brought down by a few sane, constructive editorials, but by the conduct within. M.S. Mohamed Salihu, Chennai * * * Sir, It is a clear violation of freedom of speech and expression, the basis of a democratic system. Such acts reflect a growing intolerance and insecurity among the intellectual pygmies that now dominate India's political ruling class. Sanjay Velamparambil, Colorado, U.S.
