Letters to the Editor
Sir, The fourth estate should not be cowed down. Police entering the premises of a national newspaper without proper papers is highly condemnable. The matter should be immediately referred to the courts since it violates freedom of the Press. N. Raveendar, Chengalpattu, T.N. * * * Sir, What better tribute can The Hindu receive on its 125th year of fearless existence? What was meant to be a crown of thorns has turned into a wreath of laurels from your countless readers, for adherence to the most fundamental of rights in a democracy, the right to express in the public interest at the cost of personal pain. T.S. Gopal, Chennai * * * Sir, The events of Friday are a sad reflection of the diminishing space for democracy and pose a serious threat to civil liberties and rights enshrined in the Constitution. It was heartening to read your editorial reassuring the readers that you will continue to uphold the democratic spirit. S.V. Venugopalan, Chennai * * * Sir, The action against The Hindu is an attempt to throttle the most reputed newspaper of the country, renowned for its unbiased editorials. S.M. Basha, Kurnool, A.P. * * * Sir, The swoop on The Hindu office by the police deserve all round condemnation. All newspapers in the country should join the fight to counter attempts to muffle their voice. B.V. Kumar, Nellore, A.P. * * * Sir, The readers of The Hindu are with you in this hour of crisis. K. Sundar, Chennai
