Those selected are R.M. Ramseena (nine), a resident of Kuttichal in Thiruvananthapuram district, Vipeesh Kumar (13) of Kannur district, T.T. Neethu (15), of Kottayam district, P.T. Ajith Kumar (9), of Nedungapara in Ernakulam district and K.S. Saneesh (14), of Thrissur district. Ramseena, the youngest daughter of Maheen and Ramla of Rajeena Manzil in Kuttichal, is a fifth standard student of the Paruthippally Government Girls High School. She won the award for saving Raseena, the daughter of her elder sister from being crushed under the wheels of a speeding car. While Raseena escaped with minor injuries, Ramseena's left leg came under the car's wheels and was crushed. Her leg had to be amputated. Vipeesh Kumar, who is a ninth standard student of the Chottanikkara Government High School, was chosen for the award for saving his friend, Akhil, from drowning. Akhil, who had fallen into a swollen canal at Kattachira, had been swept away and got trapped in mud. Vipeesh is the son of Padmakumar and Pushpavalli, who are natives of Kannur. T. T. Neethu, a tenth standard student of the vocational higher secondary school, Kottayam, was selected for the award for saving her friend, Roselin, who fell into the Chittar dam while washing her lunch box. Neethu is the daughter of Thundayil Thankappan. It was for saving the life of 12-year-old Sharan Kumar that eight-year-old P.T. Ajith Kumar was selected for the award. One day, while bathing in the Periyar valley main canal, at Ashamanoor panchayat, Perumbavoor, Sharan was swept away by a strong current. Showing great courage, Ajith jumped into the canal and brought Sharan to safety. Ajith, a student of standard three at the Ashamanoor Government Upper Primary school, is the son of Thankappan, a resident of Nedungapara. Fourteen-year-old K. S. Saneesh was selected for the award for rescuing a child and two women who were drowning in a pond. Saneesh, a ninth standard student of the St. Thomas school, Thrissur, was playing in a field when he heard the cries of a child and two women who had fallen into a nearby pond where they had gone to wash clothes. Saneesh rushed down the steep steps, jumped into the pond and promptly brought them to safety. Saneesh is the son of Sasidharan, a resident of Thrissur. It was the crime branch DIG, B. Sandhya, who selected the awardees. The Chief Minister, A. K. Antony, will give away the awards at a function scheduled in the Gorky Bhavan at 11 a.m. on November 14, a press note issued by the general secretary of the Child Welfare Council, Sunil C. Kurien, said.
