Karnataka boys in final

By Our Sports Reporter

Madhya Pradesh's Kishan Rajawat (right) set to spike past the double block employed by Karnataka's Mahindra (4) and Mahanth (5) in the semifinals of the Mini National volleyball championship in Bangalore on Saturday.

BANGALORE Nov. 8. Karnataka turned on the heat when it mattered most. With heavy rains lashing the city the 12th Mini National volleyball championship went indoors at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium.

And the host boys seized their chance of playing in a welcome environment with both hands, drubbing Madhya Pradesh in straight games at 25-18, 25-22, 25-13 to romp into the final. Madhya Pradesh in the morning had done a world of good for the host downing the colours of last year's champion Uttar Pradesh in four sets.

Pawan H.S was unstoppable while Ashok and Ajay were equally ruthless at the net `killing' every ball with vengeance.

Suresh as a setter came good at the right time while both Mahindra and Mahanth too chipped in effectively. MP on the other hand conceded too many negatives and Rajesh Sharma, its main hope, looked too leg weary to put up a good showing.

In a contest marked by patchy display by both teams, Madhya Pradesh outwitted the reigning champions Uttar Pradesh at 25-23, 25-22, 8-25, 25-18 in a major upset.

Rajesh Sharma was the hero for MP in its quarterfinal win, with Ashish Suryawanshi and captain Jitendra Singh playing effective roles. But then it should also be mentioned that the champion UP failed to string together a worthy resistance, barring the third set.

While UP fell, the other finalist, Manipur managed to survive. Down 0-2 sets and down 8-12 in the decider not many among the crowd would have betted on the pint-sized Manipur boys. But having levelled a 2-2 set score, Manipur realised its potential and staying ability to win the decider at 23-21 with Johnson Singh, Pradip Singh and Abs Khan being instrumental in the revival.

Karnataka had mixed luck in the quarter as its boys cruised past Andhra Pradesh while its girls met more than its match in West Bengal.

Kerala and Tamil Nadu however proved too good for their respective rivals. With the rains having thrown the schedule haywire, the semifinals will continue late into the night.

Holder Hharyana made short work of West Bengal's challenge in the girls semifinals. Haryana defeated West Bengal 25-10, 25-9, 25-16 in just over an hour.

Haryana will now meet the winner of the Tamil Nadu-Kerala semifinal clash.
