A blatant attack on press freedom, says PUCL

By Our Staff Reporter

Jammu Nov. 8. Joining the chorus of protests from across the country against the Tamil Nadu Assembly's "action" against The Hindu, the Jammu and Kashmir chapter of the People's Union for Civil Liberties today termed it a blatant attack on the freedom of press and the misuse of the ruling party's brute majority in the Assembly.

It said: "This declaration of war against the media is unprecedented in the history of democratic India and all who believe in democracy should raise their voice against it." The CPI (M)'s State secretary and MLA, M.Y. Tarigami said, "while we jealously guard the autonomy of the legislature we should equally respect the autonomy and freedom of the other pillars of Indian democracy, including the press. Democracy can only survive if all the institutions know their limitations and respect the authority of others."
