Sonia, Chandrababu Naidu affirm support

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE NOV. 8. The Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, tonight telephoned the Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu, N. Ram, and enquired about the latest incident in Bangalore when his car was intercepted by a group of policemen. Mr. Ram acquainted her with what had happened and said the Karnataka Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, had been most helpful. Ms. Gandhi expressed her concern and said, "You have the support of all of us".

Earlier in the day, a New Delhi report quoted Ms. Gandhi deplored the attempts made to curb press freedom in Tamil Nadu. "Such high-handed action by the State Legislature is a threat to our democracy. I hope that the matter is resolved amicably and expeditiously. Those of us in public life must respect the right of the press to express independent views and opinion,'' she said in a statement.

The former Prime Minister, I.K. Gujral, and the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Digvijay Singh, also called up Mr. Ram to express their support.

The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, expressed strong disapproval of what had happened in the last two days and said that The Hindu was a great newspaper with tremendous credibility. "We are with you," he reassured Mr. Ram in a telephone call from Hyderabad.
