Metro rail project: Centre to sign MoU with State

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD Nov. 8. The Union Minister of State for Urban Development, Bandaru Dattatreya, on Saturday said that the traffic woes of the twin cities would be a thing of the past with the proposed metro rail project about to take off. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is to be signed on the project with the State Government in a few days time, he said.

Addressing a gathering after participating in the foundation stone laying ceremony of the bridge connecting Indiranagar and Fatehnagar, he said this was a long felt need of the people of the area. The bridge would be built at a cost of Rs. 48 lakhs jointly by the MCH and the Kukatpally municipality. It would reduce the distance from Sanathnagar to Begumpet by two km.

The Union Minister said the city was developing at a fast pace and the multi-mode transport system and the new metro rail should go a long way in solving the public transport problems. As part of the Megacity project, the Centre had released Rs. 23 crores for the city development. In the coming days, about 3,500 pattas would be given to the landless poor in the 800-odd slums, he pointed out and explained about the housing being taken up under the `Valmiki Ambedkar Awas Yojana'.

The Sanathnagar MLA, Sripathi Rajeshwar, said the bridge plan was pending for the last five years and it was a happy occasion that it was finally being taken up and would be built in the next six months. He said with the funds donated by Mr. Dattatreya, five community halls were built in his constituency and also repairs were carried out to sewerage lines at a cost of Rs. 30 lakhs. The Mayor, T. Krishna Reddy, the Deputy Mayor, Subash Chanderji, local corporators and senior MCH officials were present.
