A gross abuse of legislative privilege, says Buddhadeb

By Our Special Correspondent

KOLKATA NOV. 9. The West Bengal Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, has condemned the action of the Tamil Nadu Assembly of sentencing senior journalists of The Hindu and the editor of Murasoli to jail as a "gross abuse of legislative privilege.''

He also criticised the "harassment'' caused to N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu, in Bangalore yesterday.

In a statement issued here today, Mr. Bhattacharjee said, "in a democracy the role of the media should not be curbed. All governments and political parties need to protect the freedom of the Press and maintain the dignity of legislative bodies.''

"The harassment caused in Bangalore to Mr. Ram is deplorable."
