We are with you

Sir, — We, the readers of The Hindu, are solidly behind you at this crucial time. Do not worry. Stick to your style of journalism.

B. Krishnakumar,

Secunderabad, A.P.

Sir, — All of us are shocked and want the Tamil Nadu Assembly to reverse its order forthwith. For the post-Emergency generation, this probably is the most brazen attempt to stifle the voice of the Press in India. The nation is with The Hindu.

Suman K. Jha,

New Delhi

Sir, — The treatment meted out to the top brass of The Hindu is deplorable and brings back memories of the dark Emergency days. I salute the indomitable spirit of The Hindu.

Ch. Sridevi,

Chennai

* * *

Sir, — We felt sad to hear about what happened to our favourite newspaper. We are with you.

D. Shanmugasundaram,

Ohio, U.S.

* * *

Sir, — It is time the Centre intervened. No Government has the right to override the Constitution.

Anirudh Govind Rajan,

New Delhi

* * *

Sir, — The President and the Prime Minister should intervene to save freedom of the Press.

S. Ravindra Chetty,

Chittoor, A.P.

* * *

Sir, — This smacks of a gross abuse of power. If the courts condone this incident, it is bound to have serious ramifications across the country. It is the duty of all Indians to ensure that the Fourth Estate is treated with due respect by those in authority and that freedom of the Press is not trampled upon.

Raaj V.,

Chennai

Sir, — The police swoop without a proper arrest warrant on the offices of The Hindu was an unfortunate and an unconstitutional misadventure. I do hope the paper will not be cowed down by such tactics and will uphold Press freedom.

K. Bhaskar,

Chennai

* * *

Sir, — The Hindu is a pioneer of the Fourth Estate. Let the powers that be not forget that they are leading a democratic set-up.

Remesh Kumar B.K.,

Thrissur, Kerala

* * *

Sir, — An attack on the freedom of the Press is an attack on the very roots of democracy. Such actions will lead to authoritarianism and ultimately the state will cease to be a democracy.

T.R. Menon,

Palakkad, Kerala

* * *

Sir, — The action against The Hindu journalists was unwarranted and very unfortunate. I hope the battle between the Tamil Nadu Government and The Hindu will end smoothly.

E. Murralidharan,

Chennai

* * *

Sir, — Only one thought comes to mind: "Vinasa kalae Vipareetha Buddhi". I pray to the Almighty for continued press freedom and freedom of expression in our country.

Sam Swaminathan,

Auckland, New Zealand

* * *

Sir, — Fear not. The perpetrators of sacrilege in the 125th year of your existence have only enhanced your radiance and stature in the realm of truthful journalism and in the hearts of millions of your readers across the globe, who stand with you.

Kishore Srinivasan,

Pennsylvania, U.S.

* * *

Sir, — The Hindu was named "Mount Road Mahavishnu" by the late C.N. Annadurai. Wake up. Assume your Vishwaroopa. Show them your supremacy.

A. Rajasekaran,

Salem, T.N.

* * *

Sir, — The Prime Minister said at The Hindu's 125th year celebrations, "be the voice of the voiceless". I now ask him, there is an attempt to silence the voice itself. What are you going to do?

V. Balasubramanian,

Chennai

* * *

Sir, — I am sure the action against The Hindu is a blessing in disguise. It will enhance your reputation as the most respected Indian national newspaper with absolute dependability. I totally agree with the opinion of the eminent jurist V.R. Krishna Iyer (`A direct assault on the press', Nov 9.)

P.J. Joseph,

Chennai

* * *

Sir, — I hope that this episode will eventually end all state-sponsored witch-hunts against the Press in our country. I extend my wholehearted support to The Hindu.

Prem Krishnan,

Thiruvananthapuram

* * *

Sir, — I am appalled at what happened on November 7. Please do not give in. I am confident you will prevail.

Ranjit Mani,

Maryland, U.S.

* * *

Sir, — One is reminded of the Emergency days. It is high time authoritarian tendencies are fought tooth and nail by all freedom-loving people.

Ramesh H.R.,

Tumkur, Karnataka

* * *

Sir, — Difference of opinion is the hallmark of any democracy. Healthy criticism is a must for an effective and people-friendly administration and good governance. The suppression of freedom of expression is the negation of democratic values and any suppression of the Fourth Estate will be undesirable for a decent society. The Hindu has always stood for not only democratic values but also has been fair and even-handed in reporting and presenting news. The 125 years of its existence is a bright testimony to this.

K. Malikul Azeez,

Chennai
