Scribes' memorandum to Nitish

By Kanwar Yogendra

SHIMLA Nov. 9. The Shimla Press Club, the Himachal Journalists Forum and the Himachal Union of Journalists submitted a memorandum to the Railways Minister, Nitish Kumar, condemning the sentencing of the editors and senior journalists of The Hindu and demanding the removal of the Jayalalithaa Government in Tamil Nadu.

Mr. Kumar, who was here today to preside over the centenary celebrations of Kalka-Shimla Railways, said that nobody could support the Tamil Nadu Government's action and it should be condemned by everyone.

He said it reminded him of his one month in jail when he and others protested against the Bihar Press Bill.

`Unfortunate'

The Himachal Chief Minister, Virbhadra Singh, called the developments "unfortunate" and said the issue could have been settled amicably. Such incidents should not be repeated, he said while speaking to this correspondent. Members of Himachal Journalists Forum have called an emergency meeting tomorrow to discus the issue of legislative attempts to gag the freedom of the press.
