Protest in Varanasi

VARANASI NOV. 9 . Artists, political activists and educationists joined a demonstration here to protest the Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker's decision to sentence to 15 days' simple imprisonment the Editor of The Hindu, N. Ravi, and four others. A meeting held on the occasion termed the act "an attempt to crush the voice of the common people". The demonstrator burnt an effigy to express their anger against the decision. "Certain elements are not only misusing their chair after coming to power but have also started threatening the freedom of expression. This will be opposed at any cost. This is unfortunate for the world's largest democratic state where such an outrageous attempt is being initiated," the meeting said. It urged the Speaker to withdraw the decision and appealed the President and Prime Minister to intervene in the matter.

Support for T.N. journalists

The Tripura Working Journalists' Association (TWJA), while condemning the Tamil Nadu Speaker's order, said it would stand with the journalists of Tamil Nadu. ``We believe that such an order will violate the provisions of Article 19 of the Constitution. Our association will join journalists of the country if any nationwide movement is launched to protest against the Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker's order,'' it said in a statement.
