18 MLAs unlikely to get renomination

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI NOV. 9. The Congress is continuing with its process of picking up candidates for the 200-member Rajasthan Assembly amid indications that nearly 18 sitting MLAs are likely to be denied renomination.

The party's Central election committee, chaired by its president, Sonia Gandhi, has been pouring over the list of aspirants for the December 1 elections since Thursday and has so far cleared names of 73 candidates for the Chhattisgarh Assembly.

Party sources said here that at least two Ministers were in the list of those sitting MLAs who were considered. Another aspect was the decision to field close relatives of senior party leaders in the State. Those who are understood to have made the grade include Jagat Singh, (Laxmangarh constituency), son of senior CWC member, K. Natwar Singh; Mahipal Maderna, (Bhopalgarh constituency), son of the Speaker, Parasram Maderna, and Braj Kishore Sharma, (Jaipur rural), son of another CWC member, Nawal Kishore Sharma.

With less than a week left for the last date for nomination on November 14, the committee is still to consider the nominees for the Delhi Legislative Assembly.

The party has also asked its Rajya Sabha MP, A.A. Khan, alias Durru Mian, to contest from Tijara.
