An attack on press freedom, say Pak. journalists

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD NOV. 10. The Pakistan chapter of the South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA) has condemned the sentencing of five senior journalists of The Hindu by the Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker.

Its secretary-general, Imtiaz Alam, president, Reazuddin Ahmed, and president SAFMA Pakistan, M. Ziauddin, expressed their solidarity with the struggle of the Indian journalists against "the vicious attack on press freedom".

They welcomed the Supreme Court order staying the arrests.

They took serious exception to the highhandedness of the police in entering the premises of the newspaper twice without valid documents.

Mr. Alam and Mr. Ziauddin called upon the journalist community in South Asia to condemn the anti-press action of the Tamil Nadu Assembly and express solidarity with their counterparts in India, especially with the staff of The Hindu.

In a letter to N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu, Mr. Alam assured full support to the cause of press freedom.

He said the SAARC journalist summit, to be held in Islamabad on January 3-4, will take full cognisance of press freedom, besides raising its voice for free flow of information and free movement of mediapersons across frontiers.
