Pak. charge of denial of visas to scribes refuted

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD NOV. 10. The Indian High Commission here today categorically denied allegations that some Pakistani journalists were refused visas to cover the SAARC Information Ministers' conference in New Delhi beginning tomorrow.

A senior official of the mission said that barring a few cases visas had been given to all the Pakistani journalists from the print and television media to cover the event. Eighteen journalists were given visas though some of them approached the mission on Friday evening and Saturday.

The Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman, Masood Khan, alleged at the regular weekly briefing that visas had been denied. Responding to a question, he said that denial of visas to some journalists went against India's stand of promoting people-to-people contact.

"It is a very regrettable decision by India and exposed their double standards. On the one hand they want people-to-people contacts and on the other they are restricting movement of journalists. They expect Pakistan to roll out a red carpet for their journalists and Parliamentarians and when it is our turn, what we see is red signal," he claimed.
