Self-help groups to improve village economy

By Our Staff Correspondent

JAIPUR NOV. 10. Underlining the need for generation of public awareness and expansion of education in tribal-dominated areas, the Rajasthan Governor, Kailashpati Mishra, has suggested that self-help groups be formed in the rural areas in large numbers to improve the local economy of villages.

Addressing a meeting of district officials in Sirohi in south Rajasthan on Sunday, Mr. Mishra said that in addition to the appointment of self-help groups, the funds allocated for the tribal sub-plan areas should be spent on the welfare of tribal population alone. About 25 per cent of the population in Sirohi district consists of tribals.

The Governor also sought information about various works undertaken under the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojana, Panchayati Raj dispensation and the Forest Department's schemes in the district.

The District Collector, Rajesh Yadav, apprised Mr. Mishra of the geographical, administrative and law and order situation of Sirohi and provided information about development works in the district's three sub-divisions and five panchayat samitis.
