Kalam to attend hydel plant function

By Our Staff Reporter

Bangalore Nov. 10. The President of India, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, will attend the 100th anniversary celebrations of Asia's first hydroelectric power station, established in 1902 at Shivanasamudram on the banks of the Cauvery.

The Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, announced this at a function organised by Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd. (KPCL) where he handed BHEL a letter of award for the engineering and procurement contract (EPC) for the Rs. 2,100-crore Bellary Thermal Power Station. The anniversary celebrations would be in December or January, Mr. Krishna said.

Shivanasamudram is also noteworthy for the fact that, in 1902, it had the world's longest transmission line of 147 km linking it with Kolar Gold Fields.

Such achievements were possible because of the foresight of leaders such as Sir Mirza Ismail, Sir Mokshagundam Vivesvaraya, and others from the erstwhile princely State of Mysore. That reputation had been ably supported and carried forward by organisations such as KPCL, Mr. Krishna added.
