Nuclear power capacity of 14 reactors to be enhanced

VELLORE Nov. 10. The nuclear power capacity of 14 reactors, which was 2,720 Mwe, is expected to go up by 4,700 by 2010, with the completion of works on nine reactors, now in progress, according to Baldev Raj, Director, Material, Chemicals and Reprocessing Groups, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam.

Speaking on `R & D challenges in fast breeder reactors for energy security in the country', organised by the Centre for the Industry-Institute Interaction of the Vellore Institute of Technology here today, Dr. Raj said the nine fast breeder reactors included two each at Koodankulam (Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu), Tarapur (Maharashtra), Kaiga (Karnataka) and Kota (Rajasthan) and one at Kalpakkam (Tamil Nadu). India occupied the second place in the world, next to China, in establishment of FBRs.

The IGCAR scientist said all components were being manufactured indigenously at Kalpakkam. Major industries contributed to the effort. The Research and Development laboratory at the IGCAR, Kalpakkam, had facilities for engineering development, structural mechanics, materials development, radio metallurgy and non-destructive examination, radio chemistry, reprocessing development, health and safety, besides state-of-the-art post irradiation examination facilities for advanced FBR fuel. A large number of robots were developed by the IGCAR in collaboration with educational institutions and industries.
