Dravid walks away with Castrol award

Bangalore Nov. 10. Rahul Dravid won the `Castrol Indian Cricketer of the Year' award here during a glittering function at the Taj Westend on Monday night. "It is a great honour especially in a year when all of us contributed. It makes it all the more special as the award has been decided by former and current cricketers. I always believed in earning the respect of my colleagues and to get that from people who played the game is indeed a moment that I cherish," Dravid said.

The Indian vice-captain had earlier won the award in 1998-99 and 2001-02. Dravid won the award from a list of nominees who included Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh. Dravid bagged a trophy along with the winners cheque for Rs. 5 lakhs.

Earlier, nostalgia left a pleasant imprint as Sunil Gavaskar walked away with the `Lifetime Achievement' award. Aptly, Kapil Dev presented the award to Gavaskar and said, "scoring ten thousand runs in that period when the great fast bowlers dominated is no joke. I hope people understand the value of his runs and the quality of attacks he faced." Gavaskar, overwhelmed by the moment, paused a while before thanking his parents, his childhood pals, his teammates including the likes of Kapil Dev, Erapalli Prasanna and Syed Kirmani.

"It is a honour to be here and get this award," Gavaskar said. Ambati Rayudu won the `Junior Cricketer' award. Rayudu expressed his dream to make it to the senior Indian side. Perhaps the finest tribute he got was when Gavaskar said, "Rayudu, like you are here when I got the lifetime achievement award, I wish I am also there when you get the lifetime achievement award."

The men behind the scenes were forced into the limelight as captain Sourav Ganguly, coach John Wright, physio Andrew Leipus and former trainer Adrian Le Roux were honoured with the special award for `Men who made the difference.'
