Campaigning on DD, AIR: Cong. gets the lion's share

NEW DELHI NOV.10. The ruling Congress has been allotted the maximum of 180 minutes for poll campaigning on Doordarshan and All India Radio. Based on the share of votes of by political parties in the 1998 elections, the BJP has been given 170 minutes of the broadcast time for the December 1 Assembly elections by the Election Commission.

Talking to reporters after the draw of lots for broadcast and telecast on Doordarshan and AIR, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Delhi, Arun Goyal, said the BSP has been allocated 55 minutes while the Nationalist Congress Party, the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) get 45 minutes each.

In the 1998 elections, the Congress had got 47.76 per cent of the total votes polled, while the BJP received 35.82 per cent followed by the BSP (3.63), the CPM (3.20) and the CPI (1.14).

While Doordarshan would telecast the speeches of leaders of political parties between 7-15 p.m. and 8 p.m. daily for six days from November 20, AIR Indraprastha Channel would broadcast between 7-45 p.m. and 8-30 p.m., Mr. Goyal said.

An additional time of 6 p.m. to 6-30 p.m. on Doordarshan and 5 p.m. to 5-30 p.m. has been allocated for public telecast / broadcast by the political parties, he added.

Representatives of the political parties were informed that their speeches would be recorded 48 hours before the telecast and they would have to submit the script three days in advance, he said.
