Sri Lankan situation `fluid', says Sibal

NEW DELHI NOV. 10. The Foreign Secretary, Kanwal Sibal, said today that the counter-proposals presented by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) constituted a "challenge" that had to be addressed. It was India's "ardent wish" that the current political crisis in Sri Lanka ended.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Sibal said that the situation in the island nation was a "fluid" one.

Referring to the statements being made in Colombo, he said these had important political implications.

"We want peace and stability in Sri Lanka," Mr. Sibal said. Also, India wanted the peace process in that country promoted. For this to happen, there was a "need for unity on the Sinhala side". The Government and the Opposition, he hoped, would be able to work together.

Mr. Sibal said India did not have to respond to everything that was said in Colombo.

"The best thing to do is to stay out."
