dated November 12, 1953: Preserving Hindu Dharma

His Holiness Sri Veeraraghava Yathindra Maha Desikan Swami of Sri Ahobila Mutt was winding up his 20-day camp in Bangalore to go to Mysore on the 11th camping en route on Kengari, Mandya, Pandavapura and Melkote. His Holiness had given a series of discourses on the greatness of the Azhwars and on Sanatana Dharma. Mysore Chief Minister, Mr. K. Hanumanthaiya, called his His Holiness and discussed with him matters relating to Hinduism. His Holiness spoke to The Hindu on Hindu dharma and culture, which he said should be preserved not by showing hatred towards others, but by developing catholicity of outlook. Young children had to be taught in their tender age the guiding principles of Hindu culture and dharma. Faith in religion was deep-rooted in every Hindu, but some were reluctant to practise their faith and performing the prescribed rituals, for fear of criticism by others. Such timidity had to be shed. His Holiness wanted students to learn properly one's mother-tongue, Hindi, and Sanskrit, and English. One need not attain high proficiency in all of them, but a working knowledge had to be achieved by every student. His Holiness favoured religious heads touring the country, staying in contact with their sishyas, and propounding the tenets of our great and enduring Hindu religion.
