dated November 12, 1953: Stars and Travel

From the Editorials: The Railway administration has become Soolam-conscious. It has boldly stated that south-bound trains are half full on Thursdays due to Soolam, which makes it inauspicious to travel in particular directions on days of the week. This is an attractive thesis and not less plausible than the stock explanations of economists confronted with India's poverty.

But there are considerations to be urged against Soolam belief. No train goes straight as an arrow towards its target. It may go to a Northern destination, but on the way it manages to take in a bit of the East, the West, and even the South.

The law of Soolam also provides for exceptions and special dispensations which the devout can take advantage of.
