It's diversionary tactics: CPI

By Our Staff Reporter

CUDDAPAH Nov. 11. The CPI State Secretary, Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy, on Tuesday charged the Chandrababu Naidu Government with preparing for early Assembly elections by setting aside major problems plaguing people.

Addressing a press conference here, the CPI leader said the Government must categorically state the reasons for advancing the Assembly elections, if it decided to dissolve the House. The Government, which "ignored'' scores of public problems during its eight-year-rule, was hastily issuing G.O.s in the last eight days to "hoodwink'' people who were vexed with the Government's "apathy,'' he alleged.

Mr. Sudhakar Reddy alleged that Mr. Naidu was considering the humanitarian response to the recent naxal attack on him as a sympathy wave. The Government announced the `one crore boons' and showering sops on various sections of people fearing defeat, he alleged. The reshuffle of IAS and IPS officers was meant to ensure that officials favourable towards the TDP would help it regain power, he alleged.

He alleged that the Chief Minister's office leaked that the Velugu survey was haphazard, because it furnished factual data that the percentage of below the poverty line persons had increased manifold, that was contrary to the goals of Vision 2020. The solution was to identify the beneficiaries in gram sabhas in the presence of all-party committees by raising the annual income ceiling to Rs. 36,000, he said. The Government promised new ration cards but mooted their scrapping after the polls, he alleged.

The CPI leader asked the Government to state whether it proposed to resolve the naxalite issue through negotiations or through encounters. He said a political solution was needed and the Government which failed the talks must revive it. He alleged that the Government was relying on the police force, which was given total powers but was not under the Government's control.

He wondered how the DGP, S.R. Sukumara, announced a political decision such as the plans to ban APCLC and some public organisations.

Asserting that CPI would continue its stir against the "anti-people'' policies of the Government, he said all Collectorates would be picketed on November 20 demanding implementation of a special package for Telangana and completion of irrigation projects.

The CPI planned to contest 50 seats in the State and was having preliminary discussions with the CPI(M) on seat adjustments. The Left and secular forces should get together to rout the TDP-BJP combine in the polls, he asserted.

`Corruption on the rise:' Later addressing a seminar on the `Governments' corruption scandals - public awareness', organised by the CPI district council here, Mr. Reddy alleged that the Bofors scandal caused a furore in the past, but scams had become a regular feature of late and involved almost every Ministry and department.

Alleging that corruption had become rampant in the Chandrababu Naidu Government, he reeled out the list of scams such as Yeleru, scholarships, stationary, fake stamp papers, electric timers, marks revaluation scams and formation of syndicates in tenders. He called for a mass movement against growing Government corruption and demanded that enquiry was needed to expose who was the `Big Boss'.

The Kamalapuram MLA and Congress leader, M.V. Mysoora Reddy, criticised the Government for refusing discussion on scams and Government lapses in the Assembly.

A professor of Nagarjuna University, C. Narasimha Rao, said corruption was a major that rocked the nation and hampered development.
