Kurnool, Cuddapah cops on tenterhooks

By Our Staff Reporter

KURNOOL Nov. 11. Inadequate force has seriously affected anti-naxal operations in Kurnool and Cuddapah districts. The People's War spread its activities to Nallamala range from Telangana but the police force is not fully geared to meet the challenge.

Out of 80 police stations in Kurnool district, about 30 police stations are located in the extremist zone. Only half a dozen police stations are fortified to repulse the naxal attack. In Cuddapah district, out of 64 stations, 32 are vulnerable to extremist attacks. Here too, very few police stations are equipped to handle surprise raids.

Officers monitoring the anti-extremist operations expressed that even policemen in Rayalaseema districts were not tuned to take on the extremists. The officers fear that they might get exposed if an initiative is taken.

In Telangana districts after a battle with the extremists for two decades, every policeman is mentally prepared to repulse the attack.

Officers from Kurnool district requisitioned the Government to spare a few companies of armed forces to the district after the attacks were carried out on police stations at Srisailam, Sundipenta and Pagidyala. But Kurnool district was given only two companies of additional forces whereas in every Telangana district about 15 companies were involved in anti-naxal operations. The officers dealing with the extremist operations told the higher-ups in unambiguous terms that the movement was going to spread in more and more police station areas. The extremist activity in Kurnool district was still on low key because the two dalams -- Bhavanasi and Mahanandi -- were still in nascent stage.
