DAVANGERE NOV. 11. A farmer who was unable to repay his debts committed suicide at Yaragatti village in Hodigere hobli of Chennagiri taluk on Monday night. The farmer, Sharanappa (65), had four acres of lands in the village. He had taken a loan of Rs. 20,000 from a bank and Rs. 70,000 from moneylenders. Since he was unable to raise any crop for four years he could repay the loans, it is said. So he decided to sell his land a few months ago but could not get the price he wanted as land prices had slumped, mainly due to the drought. Frustrated by this he committed suicide, it is said. Sharanappa leaves five daughters and a blind son.
