MPs to review railway projects in Madurai division

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI NOV. 11. About 25 MPs, including five from Kerala, will meet here on November 24 to have a firsthand information of various ongoing projects in the Madurai Railway Division.

Top railway officials, including the Southern Railway General Manager, V. Anand, and heads of various departments, will participate in the meeting and apprise the MPs of the progress made on various fronts, including passenger amenities, safety and punctuality.

"The forum will also enable the elected representatives to reflect on the public grievances in their respective constituencies which can be attended to," a railway official said.

Some of the projects which would be reviewed at the meeting include the Rs. 577.61-crore Kollam-Tirunelveli-Tiruchendur-Tenkasi-Virudhunagar (357 km) gauge conversion project sanctioned in 1997-98, the Rs. 243-crore Madurai-Rameawaram (162 km) project sanctioned in 1997-98, the Rs. 187.81-crore Tiruchi-Manamadurai (150 km) project sanctioned in 2000-2001 and the Madurai-Dindigul doubling work sanctioned this year at a total cost of nearly Rs. 100 crores.

"It is likely that the MPs may take to the notice of the Railway Minister the meagre allocation of funds to sanctioned projects and seek remedial measures at the earliest. The priority is now for the Madurai-Rameswaram gauge conversion and Madurai-Dindigul doubling works," the official said.

The MPs are also expected to inspect the ongoing construction of the Food Plaza and other beautification works here. Planting of 1,000 saplings of different varieties on the railway station premises and raising a herbal garden were also being planned during their visit, official sources said.

A similar meeting of MPs at the State-level was convened by the Union Minister of State for Railways, A.K. Moorthy, in Madurai last year in which the Minister assured execution of a Rs. 2,000-crore project to establish a double line between Kanyakumari and Chennai Egmore.
