Mass Communication students observe fast

Tirunelveli Nov. 11. The students of the Department of Mass Communication of the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, wearing black badges, observed a dawn-to-dusk hunger strike on the university premises today, protesting against the arrest warrants issued by the Assembly against the Editor and four others of The Hindu and the Editor of Murasoli.

They also wore black badges on November 10 as a mark of protest against the verdict.

The present government, in a bid to intimidate the members of the fourth estate, had virtually unleashed a war against the media ever since it assumed office two and a half years ago. The slew of criminal defamatory cases being filed against the Press by the State Government was a futile attempt to demoralise the members of the media, they said.

They also condemned the ``highhandedness'' of the police, which entered the office premises of The Hindu without any valid document minutes after the verdict was given by the Speaker, K. Kalimuthu.
