Meet discusses modernisation of Besant Nagar crematoria

Chennai Nov. 11. Residents of Adyar and its neighbouring area on Sunday discussed modernisation of electric crematoria at Besant Nagar in view of the high atmospheric pollution and the increased density of suspended particulate matter in the air.

Explaining the features of a facility installed at Kannammapet burial ground, T.Nagar, by Parama Santhi Nilayam, an NGO, through a video presentation, the participants favoured similar modernisation of the two electric crematoria at Besant Nagar.

The facility at Kannammapet, installed at a cost of Rs. 30 lakhs, emitted permissible level of toxins and smoke as the combustion took place in two different chambers and the smoke was passed through a series of water showers and a filter treatment facility before being let out.

S. Abhaya Kumar of Parama Santhi Nilayam spoke about the project implemented at Kannammapet with assistance from Chennai Corporation, citizens' groups, organisations such as Exnora and corporate sponsors.

V. Maithreyan, Rajya Sabha MP, promised to consider helping initiative with his constituency development fund.

Rajendra Babu, councillor and zone X ward committee chairman, promised assistance in clearing the proposal by the Corporation. The meeting was organised by Exnora International in association with Lions Club International District 324-A1 and Mangayarkarasi Magalir Manram.
