16-year-old rape victim attempts suicide

BANGALORE Nov. 11. A 16-year-old maid reportedly set herself on fire after she was raped by a youth at her employer's house in Jagjivanramnagar (J.J. Nagar) police station limits on Monday afternoon. The youth has not been identified. According to a complaint lodged by her cousin, Venkatesh, she was resting after work when the youth entered the house. He threatened her with a knife, and gagged and raped her. Unable to bear the humiliation, she doused herself in kerosene and set herself on fire, according to police on Tuesday.

The girl was reportedly alone in the house. Neighbours, who rushed to the place on hearing her scream, admitted her to the Victoria Hospital. She is in a serious condition with 60 per cent burns. J.J. Nagar police have registered a case of rape. A search has been launched for the accused.

Two die in accidents

A cyclist, Loganathan (40), who was knocked down by a BMTC bus near BHEL Circle in Sadashivanagar police station limits on Monday evening, died when he was being taken to hospital.

He was an electrician at the Indian Institute of Science. Sadashivanagar traffic police have arrested the bus driver and seized the vehicle.

Another cyclist, Prasad (30) of Ashwathnagar in Marathahalli, died on the spot when he was knocked down by a lorry on Monday night.

Ganja seized

Govindamma (35) of Kalasipalyam Corporation Colony and Parvez (25) of Cottonpet Bakshi Gardens have been arrested on the charge of peddling ganja in Motinagar, Kalasipalyam. Police said that ganja worth about Rs. 12,500 was seized from them.

Cell phones seized

Commercial Street police have seized 14 mobile phones, one of which is camera-equipped, and charged two persons from Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, Irfan (20) and Saleem (22), with theft. The phones, which are estimated to be worth about Rs. 1.5 lakh, were reported stolen in Commercial Street police station limits. Police said that the two accused had rented a room in a city hotel, and that the main accused in the case was absconding.

Scooter recovered

A scooter, worth about Rs. 20,000, which was reported stolen from Ashoknagar police station limits, has been recovered. L. Suresh (38) of Chikkabazaar Street in Shivajinagar has been arrested on the charge of theft.

Convicted

The city's 4th Additional Sessions Judge, B. Yoginath, on Tuesday found a man guilty of attempt to murder, sentenced him to undergo imprisonment for two years, and imposed a fine. Madhu Babu, who was convicted, caused serious injuries to Dhanajay from Baiyappanahalli. The Judge, who convicted Babu under Section 326 of Indian Penal Code, imposed a fine of Rs. 3,000 on him.
