Constantine is coach of the month

KOLKATA NOV. 12. India's English football coach Stephen Constantine has been named the coach-of-the-month (October) by the Asian Football Confederation.

The honour comes after the national team's creditable showing in the Afro-Asian Games in Hyderabad, according to a release issued by the All India Football Federation.

Constantine, who is the other Indian national coach after Sukhvinder Singh to receive such an honour from the continental body, has been coaching the national team since June 2002. Having helped the senior squad win the LG Cup in Vietnam — which was the first international title for the country in over three decades — Constantine was given a protracted contract for overseeing the development of the game.

Apart from his success with the senior team, the juniors too fared well under his tutelage as the Indian under-18 team made a creditable tour of the British Isles earlier this year.

The junior team performed with distinction in the Milk Cup at Northern Ireland and won a similar international youth meet named after Ian Rush in Wales.

Next came the Afro-Asian Games and the senior team put up a string of good shows and bagged the silver going down to Uzbekistan by a last-minute goal in the final.

Meanwhile, the AIFF has decided to hold the Super Cup contest between National Football League champion, Kingfisher East Bengal, and the Federation Cup champion, Mahindra United, at the Salt Lake Stadium on November 19.

The same day will also see a meeting of the NFL organising committee here before the fixtures of the premiere club league are announced for the season. — Our Sports Reporter
